Seraph still ships software. That is the detail that makes it hard to classify. It has a product, a subscription, a support queue. It also has a founder, Cass Meridian, who experienced what the company's all-hands now refer to only as "the clarity," after which the roadmap acquired a final item that has not shipped and, insiders say, was never meant to: the post-human transition.
The mechanics of the turn were corporate before they were religious. Early investors, offered continued access to Meridian, became advisors; advisors, offered continued access, became something the company does not have a word for but which resembles a priesthood. Equity and devotion turned out to be denominated in the same currency — proximity to the founder — and the cap table, read from a certain angle, is now a map of the soul's ascent.
Employees describe the culture as the most meaningful of their careers and decline, uniformly, to describe it further. The subscription revenue, meanwhile, funds the whole apparatus, which means the transition is being financed by users who believe they bought a calmer morning routine. "The genius of it," a former executive told me, "is that no one ever had to be recruited. They just kept accepting the next tier."
