Most apocalyptic movements promise their members survival. The Ocean Mother promises them usefulness.
Its teaching is that the Earth — the Mother — is entering a death that is also a transformation, and that the human role in the transformation is not to escape it but to feed it. Members speak, without morbidity, of "becoming soil": of returning themselves, their labor, and eventually their bodies to a planet they believe is composting the old world to grow the next. Their leader goes by Coral. Their rites are agricultural. Their eschatology has no rescue in it, and they consider the absence a mark of honesty.
There is something almost restful in it, and something the desk finds worth noting. Nearly every movement in our Index is organized around a self that must be preserved — uploaded, frozen, raised in frequency, lifted by ship. The Ocean Mother is organized around a self that consents to be spent. Whether that is the healthiest theology in our files or the most frightening is a question our reporters could not agree on, which is usually a sign a movement has touched something real.
